It is seated on the bank of river Bhagirathi and holy birth place of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and popularly known as "Gour Gangar Desh" . It was once the 'Oxford of Bengal' because of the presence of many knowledgeable Sanskrit Pandits .
