Mastery Over Marks: How parents can shape lifelong learners

By focusing on curiosity, understanding, practical applications, and emotional support, parents can help children develop the skills they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. The shift from marks to mastery is essential for preparing children for the future. As learning becomes more about exploration and mastery rather than scores, children will grow into confident, capable individuals ready for the challenges ahead.

The shift emphasises developing essential skills rather than just scoring high in exams. Parents play a crucial role in guiding children toward this approach. Here’s how you can help:

  1. Encourage Curiosity and Lifelong Learning: Foster a love for learning by encouraging questions, exploration, and creativity. Provide books, documentaries, and hands-on activities that go beyond textbooks.

  2. Focus on Understanding, Not Just Memorisation: Engage in discussions about what children are learning instead of just reviewing their scores. Encourage them to explain concepts in their own words, teaching back what they’ve learned.

  3. Support Skill Development: Identify key 21st-century skills like problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. Encourage hobbies that build skills—coding, writing, public speaking, or even DIY projects.

  4. Make Learning Practical: Connect lessons to real-life applications, such as using math in budgeting or science in cooking experiments. Encourage internships, volunteering, or project-based learning.

  5. Reduce Pressure and Redefine Success: Shift focus from grades to growth, effort, and improvement. Celebrate perseverance, creativity, and problem-solving rather than just top scores.

  6. Provide Emotional and Moral Support: Encourage a growth mindset—mistakes are learning opportunities, not failures. Be a supportive listener and create a safe space for children to express their academic concerns.

  7. Encourage Self-Reflection and Goal Setting: Help children set personal learning goals beyond exams. Teach them to assess their own progress and identify areas of improvement.

  8. Model the Right Attitude: Show enthusiasm for learning in everyday life—discuss books, current affairs, or personal skill-building efforts. Demonstrate how you handle challenges and setbacks positively.

  9. Engage with Schools and Educators: Advocate for skill-based learning approaches in schools. Collaborate with teachers to understand how to reinforce skill mastery at home.
